Wild Turkey Rare Breed was introduced to the market in 1991. This is at a time when there weren’t many higher proof bourbons around - the industry was still hung over (pun intended) from the three-decade slump that was just starting to turn around, and most bourbons were still between 80-100 proof (the latter were usually Bottled-in-Bond, or otherwise would probably have been lower proof as well). The first batch came off as Batch W-T-01-91, and it’s been in production ever since.

While the continuity is impressive, the specs have changed several times. I’m by no means an expert on every change that took place, but as I taste through Rare Breed versions I will continue to add notes, information, and what history I can add to the story.

As of now, I’ve tried three variations:

W-T-01-99

While not the original batch 01-91, this was representative of the older, first incarnation Wild Turkey Rare Breed bottlings. At a mere 108.4 proof, this is an easy drinker that unfortunately is relegated to the auction markets now.

Rare breed 116.8 Proof

The current Rare Breed batch profile (2017-present) turned the proof up one more notch. Still at a very manageable 116.8 proof, this might be the best value barrel strength bourbon you can find.
