Pikesville Rye Review: Tasting Notes
Eye: Amber maple syrup. Thick rims and thick droplet legs.
Nose: Good spice on the nose, fruity underneath. Some dark chocolate in the background. Vanilla builds with air.
Palate: Rye, but lots of bourbon too. Caramelized bread pudding, a little minerality, tart peaches and stone fruits. Mouthfeel is spicy at first, coating, then becomes fruitier and a little vitamin-y.
Finish: Brings out more of the chocolate and vitamins to the fore, turning the rye bitter. Kind of odd. The stone fruits hand around.
Overall: I don’t expect the vitamin note from a Heaven Hill product, and to be honest it was incredibly off-putting. Shame because the nose and palate before that were fairly pleasant.
