George T. Stagg Bourbon 2006 Review: Tasting Notes
Eye: Garnet and mahogany - gorgeous.
Nose: Tight nose, a touch of proof, some chocolate opens in the background. Roasted cornbread, dried cherries. Nose opens slightly but never reaches its potential.
Palate: Pleasant, very bearable heat covers the whole tongue (I tried this blind, so finding out 140.6º was bearable is a shocker). Creamy vanilla custard heavily spiked, a bit of cherry cough syrup adds bitterness like bitters in a cocktail. Mouthfeel is rich and syrupy, smoky maple char and plenty of oak and pepper without becoming woody. Coating like a lacquer.
Finish: Astringent, followed by a roasted corn sweetness. Dried cherry verging on bitter that stays just shy of turning.
Overall: The mouthfeel is fantastic, though the nose kind of disappoints. The cough syrup notes, while not overbearing, come too close for comfort. Good bourbon, just an ok Stagg.
Final Rating: 5.8

7 | Great | Well above average (Blanton’s Original, Old Weller Antique, Booker’s)
6 | Very Good | Better than average (Four Roses Small Batch Select, Knob Creek 14+ YO Picks)
5 | Good | Good, solid, ordinary (Elijah Craig Small Batch, Buffalo Trace, Old Grand-Dad Bottled-in-Bond)

2 | Poor | Forced myself to drink it (Buckshee Bourbon and Rye)
1 | Disgusting | Drain pour (Virginia Distilling Co. Cider Cask)
