George T. Stagg Bourbon 2005 Lot B Review: Tasting Notes
Eye: Garnet-hued maple syrup. Very thin rims, small dangling drops.
Nose: Sauternes sweetness and depth, dark and vinous. Date cake, darker than the usual cherry notes. No hint of proof. Flavorful, though gentle for a George T. Stagg. Fruity dark chocolate like Brookside bites.
Palate: Hotter and rawer than the nose prepared me for. Tons of peppery spice and bitter oak up front, though the oak transforms into dark, dark chocolate. Suddenly, it’s the chocolate lava cake show. Mouthfeel is light-to-medium but oily, heat sticks to and coats the palate, eventually lessening enough to let some flavors shine.
Finish: Peppery, fruity chocolate returns. Coating and long-lasting, mouthwatering as the flavors continue to ebb and flow.
Overall: Gets better and better by sip. What started as an oaky, perhaps fruity pour turns into dark chocolate-covered dried red fruits with a pleasant, flavorful burn.
