E. H. Taylor Rye Review: Tasting Notes
Eye: Pure amber, thin rim, slow droplet legs.
Nose: Tight at first, kind of grainy. Both bourbon and rye notes are present. Toasted caramel opens up, makes the rye take over the bourbon. There’s red fruit way in the back. Think alcoholic cornbread.
Palate: Peaches and nectarines, mint, good proof heat, and oak pepperiness that reaches the entire palate. This is really good. A sweeter profile than I was expecting, with other orchard fruits and a malty sweetness building as the heat mellows out. Mouthfeel is light-to-medium-bodied, coating with a mild astringency.
Finish: Toasted marshmallow on fire, much milder heat.
Overall: I’d like a better mouthfeel. The flavors are all there, but the thin mouthfeel, even tasted double blind, detracts too much. Once the heat mellows it’s an enjoyable sip.
