Bourbon Heritage Month 2020 Day 2: Flaviar Member’s Breckenridge Reserve Blend

Breckenridge Reserve Blend by Flaviar Members

As I’ve said elsewhere, Flaviar really helped me experience many of the whiskies and other spirits that I never would have tried otherwise. Breckenridge Distillery was one of these - hailing from Colorado, Breckenridge is the highest distillery in the world (at 9,600 ft above sea level!), drawing water from Colorado mountain water and producing some excellent products.

This exclusive Flaviar Breckenridge Reserve Blend was chosen by a panel of members led by Master Distiller Hans Stafsholt. Only 480 bottles were produced.

Breckenridge Reserve Blend Review: Tasting Notes

Eye: Amber-gold with long legs in the glass.

Nose: Sweet nose, like a port-cask finish. Red fruit and plums clarify as flavors after a little air.

Palate: Caramel and toffee overtake the fruitiness, which disappears after the nose. Mouthfeel is a bit thin but is there enough to carry the flavors. Another 10 proof points would make a huge difference there. Zero burn here.

Finish: Long and coating, leaves some caramel in the corners of your mouth.

Overall: Breckenridge Reserve Blend is a unique blend that bridges the classic Breckenridge Bourbon flavor profile with their port cask finish, lending the nose to the latter and taking the palate from the former. Mouthfeel could be a bit more viscous and a few more proof points wouldn’t hurt, but overall this is a pleasant drinker that stands up neat.

Final Rating: 5.2

10 | Insurpassable | Nothing Else Comes Close (Blanton’s Straight from the Barrel)

9 | Incredible | Extraordinary (GTS, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof B518 and B520)

8 | Excellent | Exceptional (12+YO MGP Bourbon, Highland Park Single Barrels)

7 | Great | Well above average (Blanton’s Original, Old Weller Antique, Booker’s)

6 | Very Good | Better than average (Four Roses Small Batch Select, Knob Creek 14+ YO Picks)

5 | Good | Good, solid, ordinary (Elijah Craig Small Batch, Buffalo Trace, Old Grand-Dad Bottled-in-Bond)

4 | Sub-par | Many things I’d rather have (A.D. Laws Four Grain, Compass Box “Oak Cross”)

3 | Bad | Flawed (Iron Smoke Bourbon, Balcones)

2 | Poor | Forced myself to drink it (Buckshee Bourbon and Rye)

1 | Disgusting | Drain pour (Virginia Distilling Co. Cider Cask)
